Eid prayer ceremony held on Thursday 05th Dec 02.
Harari community living in Melbourne, Australa held Eid ceremony at Kensington community centre.
After the speech (Khutba) delivered in Arabic language, a translation of the
Arabic speech (Khutba) text in to Hararian language was so impressive, in my opinion, and a well deserved thump up. Well done!!
Attendants were around 120-150 individuals and around 40-50 kids. (If not, please correct me) had a snack brought by volunteers and a warm congratulations to each other.
B. regards
Kamil.

Cadres of HNL vow to promote principles of revolutionary democracy

Jijiga, August 11 (ENA)-- Cadres of the Harari National League have reaffirmed their readiness to uphold and work for the implementation of the tenets of revolutionary democracy.

In a resolution they passed at the conclusion of their 17-day meeting on Saturday the cadres said revolutionary democracy was the best option to ensure human and democratic rights of nations and nationalities.

The cadres also vowed to instill the concepts and objectives of revolutionary democracy among the public in the area.

They said corruption, dependency, chauvinism and narrow nationalism have been witnessed in the region over the past 10 years due to the absence of transparent political system.

The cadres also expressed their willingness to join hands with democratic forces and fight for the prevalence of a transparent administrative system in the state.

Meanwhile, cadres of the Somali People Democratic Party said revolutionary democracy was instrumental in effecting quick and sustainable development in the region, head of the state administration said.

Principles of revolutionary democracy said vital to speed up development (corrected version)

Harar, July 31 (ENA)--Upholding the principles of revolutionary democracy could be significant in ensuring the independence of the judiciary, strengthening unity and tackling threats posed to the well being of the nation, cadres and members of the Harari national league said.

At the conclusion of a five day discussion held under the title, "the question of democracy in Ethiopia" the participants said on Monday that revolutionary democracy was the only development strategy that could fit for the objective reality in the country.

In the absence of accumulated capital, advanced technology and skilled manpower it would be difficult to adopt the principles of liberal democracy, they said.

The principles of revolutionary democracy could effectively address the basic needs of the Ethiopian people by stumping out the bane of corruption, nepotism and abuse of power, the members said.

They said revolutionary democracy could also encourage the direct participation of the people in the nation building process.

Upholding the principles of equality based on diversity and establishing harmonious relationships among the peoples of Ethiopia were the corner stones to speed up economic development, the members indicated.

They also vowed to fight narrow nationalism, chauvinism and corruption, which they described as the major threat to the whole of the country.

Harari Regional HIV/AIDS Prevention and control council & secretariat
This information is provided by the above council through IPRS
May 21, 2001 Harar

First let me start by giving you some base line information on HIV/AIDS situation and the preventive activities both locally (regionally) and nationally.

HIV/AIDS was first diagnosed in Harar in the early nineties (almost five years after the 1st case in Addis Ababa) Currently, Ministry of Health estimates that there are more than 2.6 million people living with HIV/AIDS, with adult prevalence of 7.4% and in big cities like Harar, 13.5% this points out that around 10,000 people are living with HIV/AIDS in Harar.

In 1985, National HIV/AIDS task force was founded under the Ministry of Health. Since then independent HIV/AIDS prevention programs were held by MOH, NGO’s and the regional health bureau. But the community’s inadequate awareness and their low socio economic status became a barrier for its effectiveness, In addition, the government was not fully committed, and also the programs lacked coordination and sustainability.

To solve the above problems, the Ethiopian government laid down a National policy two years ago. and since last year, it has formed an AIDS council, which is chained, by the EFDRE President and a National HIV/AIDS secretariat under the prime Minister office. for this program, the council has got 59 Million USD loan from the World Bank.

Like wise, the Harari Regional HIV/AIDS prevention council was formed in January this year, chaired by the regional president. It consists of 58 members, which are heads of regional bureaus, NGO’s religious institutions, associations, and clubs and the newly established secretariat. The regional advisory board and regional review board assist the secretariat by making sure that the programs are cost effective and are addressing the different sections of the community, especially the risk groups.

The secretariat office has established a network through HIV/AIDS task force and focal persons in the different regional bureaus. To accelerate community participation, kebele AIDS prevention committees are also organized.

The main objectives of the council are to alleviate the impact of HIV/AIDS by giving care and support to those infected and affected, and by giving adequate information to the community to bring about behavioral changes. For these aims, the council has got its first trench of the loan and some donation from the UNICEF through the central government. Although this is a good start, the financial need of the council to set these programs effectively is very high. and so the allocated loan, unless supported by other possible donation sources and active community participation of both living in Ethiopia and a blood, is not adequate.

Finally, I would like to inform that the Hararis living abroad can be a great help by supporting the council, and there by the community financially, technically, and morally. and if any body who wishes to contact the council through any possible way. and the council’s address is as follows:
